Oil Prices Fall as Iran Diplomacy Offsets Saudi Attack Risks

Oil prices fell on Monday as traders weighed efforts to ease tensions between the US and Iran against renewed security threats to Saudi Arabia and regional energy infrastructure, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Brent crude futures settled down 0.8% at $115.81 a barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude fell 1.5% to $101.76. Both benchmarks retreated after a rally that had pushed Brent to its highest closing level in nearly six months.

The decline reflected hopes that diplomatic efforts could prevent further escalation of the conflict involving Iran. Qatar had sent mediators to Tehran to pursue de-escalation efforts in coordination with the US, while Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan held talks with Iranian officials on October 26.

However, continued attacks and disruption risks limited the decline. The conflict has affected commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and other key regional waterways, leaving traders alert to the possibility of further oil supply interruptions.

The market remains sensitive to developments in the Middle East because the region is a major source of global crude supplies. Persistent uncertainty has also contributed to the recent rise in energy prices, adding pressure to the inflation outlook and complicating expectations for interest rates.

Saudi Attacks Keep Oil Supply Concerns in Focus

Security concerns remained elevated after Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi group said it had attacked pumping stations on Saudi Arabia’s East-West oil pipeline and Riyadh airport over the weekend. Saudi Arabia did not immediately confirm the reported Houthi strikes on those targets, although the Saudi-led coalition said it had destroyed drones targeting Riyadh and other parts of the kingdom.

The East-West pipeline is strategically important because it allows Saudi Arabia to move crude toward the Red Sea, providing an alternative export route when shipments through the Strait of Hormuz face disruption.

Attacks on shipping and energy infrastructure have kept traders focused on the possibility that oil flows could deteriorate further. Reuters reported that October had become the worst month for attacks on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and nearby waterways, based on data compiled by the Washington Institute for Near East Policy.

The supply risks have helped keep crude prices elevated despite Monday’s decline. Brent had gained about 6% during the previous week, while WTI advanced 2.3%, according to Reuters.

Oil Prices Remain Elevated Despite Peace Efforts

The latest decline has not erased concerns about the broader oil market. Traders are balancing the possibility of improved diplomatic relations against the risk of fresh attacks that could disrupt crude production, pipelines or tanker movements.

Goldman Sachs estimated that geopolitical uncertainty was adding about $27 a barrel to Brent prices, reflecting precautionary crude purchases and hedging against potential supply disruptions, according to the Wall Street Journal’s market coverage. The bank placed Brent’s underlying fair value near $85 a barrel, suggesting that geopolitical risks were accounting for a substantial portion of the market price.

Higher oil prices also matter for the wider economy because energy costs can feed into transportation, manufacturing and household expenses. That creates another source of uncertainty for investors assessing inflation and the outlook for monetary policy, themes also reflected in recent eurozone inflation data.

For now, oil markets remain caught between hopes for diplomatic progress and the threat of further disruption. A sustained reduction in regional tensions could ease the risk premium in crude prices, while renewed attacks on shipping or energy infrastructure could keep prices near recent highs.
