GameStop CEO Ryan Cohen Buys $22.8 Million in Shares, Raising Stake to 9.1%
  • GameStop CEO Ryan Cohen purchased 844,130 shares worth approximately $22.8 million on October 13, increasing his reported beneficial ownership to 9.1% as the video-game retailer’s stock trades near its 52-week high.

GameStop Corp. (NYSE: GME) shares drew fresh attention after Chief Executive Ryan Cohen bought approximately $22.8 million of the retailer’s stock in open-market transactions, according to a Reuters report.

Cohen acquired 844,130 shares in two transactions, paying $26.75 for 67,130 shares and $27 for another 777,000, according to the filing submitted to the US Securities and Exchange Commission. The purchases totaled approximately $22.8 million.

The transactions increased Cohen’s directly held Class A shares to about 42.5 million. Including warrants disclosed in the filing, his beneficial ownership rose to approximately 46.2 million shares, equivalent to 9.1% of the company’s outstanding shares under the filing’s calculation.

What Ryan Cohen’s GameStop Share Purchase Shows

The October 13 acquisition was Cohen’s second reported open-market purchase of GameStop shares this month. On October 2, he bought 700,000 shares for approximately $17.1 million, according to an earlier regulatory filing. His latest purchases continue a series of acquisitions made since September.

GameStop shares closed Tuesday at $27.22 and rose in after-hours trading following news of the purchase. The buying also came as the stock approached its highest levels in more than a year.

Executive purchases can attract investor attention because they show that a company insider is committing personal capital to the stock. However, a purchase does not establish that a share price is undervalued or guarantee future gains. Investors still need to assess the company’s operating performance, cash position and strategy.

Cohen has played a central role in GameStop’s efforts to reshape its business. The retailer has been adapting to changes in video-game distribution as digital downloads and online services compete with physical game sales. GameStop has also been reducing its store footprint, with hundreds of US locations included in closure tracking this year. The scale and timing of those closures should be distinguished from any new company-wide target; the latest store-closure report details the figures reported for GameStop and other retailers.

GameStop’s Strategy Remains a Key Question for GME Investors

Cohen’s purchases come as GameStop continues to attract attention from both traditional investors and traders drawn to its history as a so-called meme stock. That reputation can contribute to sharp share-price moves that are not always closely tied to changes in the company’s operating results.

The company’s strategy and capital allocation remain important considerations for shareholders. Earlier in 2026, GameStop pursued a potential acquisition of eBay, but eBay rejected the proposal. Subsequent reporting discussed the possibility of a partnership or joint venture instead, though those reports do not establish that a transaction will occur.

Cohen’s increased ownership may be interpreted by some investors as a sign of confidence in GameStop’s prospects. The filing itself, however, establishes the size and terms of the share purchase, not the reasons behind it or the company’s future performance.

For GME investors, the next questions concern how GameStop uses its capital, whether its business can generate sustainable growth and how its physical retail operations evolve as the industry shifts toward digital distribution. Cohen’s latest purchase is a notable insider transaction, but it is only one data point in assessing the stock.

The reported 9.1% beneficial ownership figure includes warrants as described in the SEC filing. It should not be confused with the number of shares Cohen directly holds, which the filing places at approximately 42.5 million after the October 13 transactions.
