XRP Ledger Smart Escrow Moves Closer as Developers Advance Ninth Devnet Release
  • XRP Ledger developers have deployed the ninth Smart Escrow Devnet release, advancing a proposed programmability feature that would allow escrow transactions to use custom WebAssembly-based release conditions.

The development marks another step toward expanding what can be done with native XRP Ledger escrow, but it does not represent a mainnet launch. XRPL's official amendment tracker currently lists SmartEscrow as “In Development,” with no default vote in the latest stable release.

The latest Devnet release was highlighted by Mayukha Vadari, a senior RippleX software engineer and one of the authors of the Smart Escrows proposal. Vadari described the ninth release as a significant step toward launch while noting that the framework remains under review and testing.

Smart Escrow Adds Programmable Conditions to XRPL

The proposed feature is based on XLS-100, a draft standard designed to add programmable release conditions to XRPL's existing escrow system. The proposal was created by Vadari and David Fuelling and remains a draft rather than an activated amendment.

Traditional XRPL escrow already allows funds to be locked until a specified time or until a cryptographic condition is satisfied. The existing system is built directly into the ledger and can hold XRP or supported fungible tokens.

Smart Escrow would add another layer by allowing a small WebAssembly program to determine whether an escrow can be completed. Under the proposed design, the custom function would run when an EscrowFinish transaction is processed.

That could support more complicated conditional transactions without requiring the entire escrow arrangement to operate through a conventional smart-contract platform.

The XLS-100 proposal identifies potential applications including notary approvals, compliance-related holds, auctions, real-estate transactions, and peer-to-peer arrangements that rely on external information or oracle data. Those are proposed use cases rather than confirmed production deployments.

The development also comes after XRPL expanded its existing escrow functionality. The TokenEscrow amendment extended native escrow capabilities to additional fungible assets, including trust-line tokens and Multi-Purpose Tokens, subject to issuer controls.

That broader escrow infrastructure is relevant to the ledger's growing focus on tokenized financial assets. Wealthier Today reported that Brazilian financial infrastructure operator CSD BR is using XRPL as a secondary record and audit layer for investment-fund ownership information.

Rust Migration Improves Smart Escrow Devnet

The ninth Smart Escrow release also includes significant technical changes beneath the user-facing functionality. One of the most important changes is the migration of the WebAssembly virtual-machine integration from C++ to Rust. According to Vadari, the revised architecture creates a single entry point for gas accounting, error handling, and related checks, while testing showed performance improvements of roughly 30% to 50% for individual host-function calls.

The release also updates host-function names, ledger fields, transaction-engine result codes and the execution entry point to use names intended for production. Developers testing the Smart Escrow technology need to update their Devnet configurations to use the latest release. The project therefore remains in a testing phase rather than being available as a standard feature on the XRP Ledger mainnet.

That distinction matters because SmartEscrow still requires the XRPL amendment process before it can become part of the production ledger. The official XRPL documentation currently identifies the feature as being in development, while XLS-100 remains a draft specification.

The proposed system is also designed with a safeguard: Smart Escrows would require an expiration value. If the programmed finish condition never succeeds, the escrow would eventually expire, and the funds could return to the sender.

Smart Escrow is part of a wider effort to add more native functionality to XRPL without turning the network into a conventional general-purpose smart-contract blockchain. The XRP Ledger Standards repository also lists XLS-101 for broader smart contracts and XLS-102 for the WebAssembly virtual machine that would support these programmable functions. Both remain works in progress.

Other XRPL developments are moving along a similar institutional path. The network has already activated a permissioned DEX for controlled on-chain trading, while Token Escrow expanded conditional settlement to issued assets.

More recently, the XRP Ledger's planned BatchV1_1 upgrade was pushed to Oct. 9 after validator support temporarily fell below the threshold needed to maintain its activation countdown.

For XRP Ledger Smart Escrow, however, the next major milestone remains the same: continued testing, completion of the technical proposal, and eventual validator consideration. The ninth Devnet release moves the project forward, but there is currently no confirmed mainnet activation date.
