XRP Ledger Batch Update Hits A Snag, Why The Upgrade Has Been Moved To October

/4 min read
  • The XRP Ledger’s BatchV1_1 upgrade has been pushed back to October 9 after validator support briefly fell below the required threshold, resetting the network’s two-week activation clock.

The XRP Ledger’s planned BatchV1_1 upgrade will not activate as early as previously expected after validator support dropped below the level required to keep its approval countdown running.

The amendment regained support from 30 of the network’s 35 tracked trusted validators on Sept. 25, according to the XRP Ledger’s amendment tracking data. Because the network requires more than 80% support for 14 consecutive days, the earliest possible activation has moved to Oct. 9 if the current backing remains intact.

The reset does not mean the Batch upgrade has been rejected. Instead, it means the approval process effectively started over after support fell below the required threshold. The development comes as the XRP Ledger is preparing several protocol changes aimed at expanding its capabilities for payments, tokenized assets, and institutional applications.

Why Was the XRP Ledger Batch Upgrade Delayed?

The XRP Ledger’s amendment process requires sustained validator support rather than simply reaching a target vote count once. With 35 trusted validators currently tracked, BatchV1_1 needs at least 29 supporting votes to remain above the 80% threshold. Its previous activation window began around Sept. 15, but support subsequently fell below the required level on Sept. 25, ending that countdown. The amendment then regained 30 votes later that day, beginning a new 14-day period.

That makes Oct. 9 an earliest possible activation date, rather than a guaranteed launch date. If support again falls below the threshold before the countdown completes, the process would reset once more. The reason for the temporary decline in validator support has not been established publicly, so it would be premature to attribute the change to a specific technical or governance dispute.

The delay is particularly notable because BatchV1_1 is already included in the XRP Ledger's v3.3.0 server software. Software availability and protocol activation are separate steps: validators can run code supporting an amendment before the amendment itself becomes an active Mainnet rule.

The current version of the Batch feature also follows an earlier security issue. In February, XRPL developers disclosed a critical flaw in the original Batch amendment that could have allowed unauthorized inner transactions. The amendment had not been activated on Mainnet, and the vulnerability disclosure said no funds were at risk. XRPL subsequently disabled the original Batch implementation in version 3.1.1 and developed BatchV1_1 as the replacement.

That history makes the validator approval process particularly important. The current vote concerns the revised implementation rather than the vulnerable version.

What Does XRP Ledger BatchV1_1 Actually Do?

BatchV1_1 is designed to let users package multiple XRP Ledger transactions into a single operation. The feature supports up to eight transactions, allowing related actions to be processed together instead of being submitted independently.

One potential use is a delivery-versus-payment transaction involving a tokenized asset. A payment and the corresponding asset transfer can be linked so that the operation either completes according to the selected batch rules or does not proceed as intended.

The feature can also support platform fees, token swaps and other multi-step transactions. RippleX previously said commercial projects were already being developed around Batch, including applications involving exchanges, wallets and asset managers.

The distinction matters for XRP investors: BatchV1_1 changes how transactions can be processed on the XRP Ledger; it does not change XRP’s supply or tokenomics.

The upgrade is part of a broader push to expand the ledger's functionality around institutional and tokenized-asset use cases. Other amendments included in the same development cycle address areas such as confidential token activity, sponsored fees, and dynamic token functionality.

The official XRP Ledger amendment tracker and Batch transaction documentation provide the clearest references for monitoring that process.
