Tesla's Bitcoin Holdings Near $1 Billion as Fundstrat Says 'Crypto Winter Is Over'

/3 min read
  • Tesla's 11,509 BTC position is approaching $1 billion as Bitcoin rallies above $86,000, and Fundstrat's Sean Farrell says the latest breakout could mark the end of the crypto winter.

Tesla's (NASDAQ: TSLA) Bitcoin holdings are approaching the $1 billion mark as a sharp rally in the cryptocurrency boosts the value of the electric vehicle maker's unchanged 11,509-BTC position. The move comes as Fundstrat Head of Digital Assets Sean Farrell says Bitcoin's latest breakout is credible and that the prolonged crypto winter is over. Farrell told Yahoo Finance that the outlook does not necessarily mean Bitcoin's advance will be linear.

That view is being accompanied by a renewed flow of capital into US spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds. The funds attracted $998.9 million in net inflows Monday, according to SoSoValue data, while Bitcoin climbed above $86,000 and briefly reached $87,360 Tuesday.

Fundstrat's Crypto Winter Call Coincides With Bitcoin Breakout

Farrell's assessment gives added context to the rise in Tesla's Bitcoin holdings. Tesla does not need to purchase additional Bitcoin for the value of its cryptocurrency position to approach $1 billion; the increase is being driven by the higher market price of BTC.

Bitcoin's latest rally followed a period of weaker prices and heavy ETF selling. Spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded roughly $450 million of outflows on Sept. 15 before returning to positive flows later in the week, including $433 million of inflows on Sept. 18. BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (NASDAQ: IBIT), Fidelity Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund (BATS: FBTC) and ARK 21Shares Bitcoin ETF (BATS: ARKB) were among the largest beneficiaries of Monday's renewed demand.

The combination of ETF inflows and the Bitcoin price breakout is central to Farrell's view that the crypto winter has ended. Other analysts have also pointed to improving market conditions, although the latest rally has included significant short covering. Compass Point analyst Ed Engel said crypto was in the early stages of a new bull market, while Nansen analyst Nicolai Søndergaard attributed the move partly to renewed ETF demand and a large short squeeze.

Tesla's Bitcoin Holdings Approach $1 Billion

Arkham data showed Tesla holding 11,509 BTC worth approximately $994.9 million as of Sept. 23, leaving the position about $5.1 million short of the $1 billion threshold. Arkham also indicated that the value of the holdings had increased by about $122.6 million over the previous week as Bitcoin gained roughly 14%.

Tesla's Bitcoin balance has not changed during that period. The increase represents a rise in the market value of the company's existing holdings rather than a new Bitcoin purchase or realized gain. At a Bitcoin price of roughly $86,850, Tesla's 11,509 BTC would be worth almost $1 billion. Every $1,000 move in Bitcoin changes the market value of Tesla's holdings by approximately $11.5 million, assuming the company's Bitcoin balance remains unchanged.

Tesla first disclosed a $1.5 billion Bitcoin investment in 2021 before selling a substantial portion of its holdings in 2022. The company has retained its current Bitcoin position for several years.

For Tesla investors, the latest move therefore links the company's cryptocurrency exposure directly to the broader Bitcoin market. If Farrell's assessment of a post-winter crypto environment proves durable, further Bitcoin gains would increase the reported value of Tesla's existing holdings without the company having to add to its position.
