T.J. Maxx Store Closures Is Not The Full Story, Here's What You Didn't Know
  • T.J. Maxx has shut three US locations this year, while its parent company continues opening stores and plans to accelerate its expansion.

T.J. Maxx has closed three US stores in 2026, but the retailer is continuing to expand its overall footprint rather than pursuing a nationwide store-reduction strategy, according to a new USA TODAY report.

The three confirmed closures are in Boston, Massachusetts; Silver Spring, Maryland; and Cumberland, Maryland. The company told USA TODAY that it does not have any additional T.J. Maxx closures planned beyond those three locations.

The latest developments follow earlier attention around T.J. Maxx store closures in 2026, but the retailer's latest store-count figures show continued growth.

Which T.J. Maxx Stores Closed in 2026?

The Boston location at 360 Newbury Street closed Jan. 5 after nearly a decade in operation. A Massachusetts WARN notice linked to the closure affected 117 workers, according to previous reporting.

The Silver Spring store at Ellsworth Place also closed after roughly 10 years. About 60 workers were affected by that closure. The third location is at 1262 Vocke Road in Cumberland, Maryland. USA TODAY identified the Cumberland location among the three 2026 closures.

Despite those shutdowns, The TJX Companies Inc. (NYSE: TJX) had 1,359 T.J. Maxx stores as of Aug. 1, five more than at the beginning of its fiscal second quarter. The company also said 11 net new T.J. Maxx stores opened during the first half of fiscal 2027.

TJX operates T.J. Maxx alongside Marshalls, HomeGoods, Homesense and Sierra in the US, as well as other retail banners internationally.

TJX Plans More Store Openings

The company expects to continue adding T.J. Maxx locations during the second half of fiscal 2027. Five stores opened in August, while additional locations are scheduled to open through November. New or recently opened locations include stores in Marshalltown, Iowa; Charlotte, North Carolina; Waco, Texas; Ponderay, Idaho; Gibsonia, Pennsylvania; Payson, Arizona; Destin, Florida; Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; and Portland, Texas.

TJX has also said it plans to increase its pace of store openings to 4% beginning next year. The company sees potential to eventually reach 7,500 stores globally across its existing retail banners and countries.

The broader TJX portfolio had more than 5,300 stores at the end of the company's second quarter. The latest figures therefore show a retail strategy centered on shifting locations and adding stores in new markets rather than broadly shrinking the T.J. Maxx chain.

For now, the confirmed T.J. Maxx closures remain limited to three locations, while the company's US store count continues to rise.
