T.J. Maxx Store Closures in 2026: Three Locations Have Shut Down as TJX Expands

/4 min read
  • T.J. Maxx has closed three US locations in 2026, but parent company TJX Companies continues to add stores and has raised its long-term expansion target.

T.J. Maxx has closed stores in Boston, Silver Spring, and Cumberland in 2026, according to Fast Company's updated list of closures. The closures have prompted questions about whether the off-price retailer is beginning a broader US store reduction, but available company data points to a different picture.

The three confirmed closures are at 360 Newbury Street in Boston, Massachusetts; 8661 Colesville Road in Silver Spring, Maryland; and 1262 Vocke Road in Cumberland, Maryland. The Boston location closed Jan. 5 after nearly a decade in operation, with a Massachusetts WARN notice affecting 117 workers. The Silver Spring store also ended a roughly 10-year run.

There is no evidence in the latest company filings of a nationwide plan to significantly shrink the T.J. Maxx footprint. Instead, The TJX Companies, Inc. (NYSE: TJX) has continued opening stores while closing individual locations.

Which T.J. Maxx Stores Are Closing in 2026?

The three locations confirmed so far are concentrated in two states.

Massachusetts

  • 360 Newbury Street, Boston

Maryland

  • 8661 Colesville Road, Silver Spring
  • 1262 Vocke Road, Cumberland

Fast Company reported that the Boston and Silver Spring closures were among the chain's notable shutdowns this year, while its updated list also includes the Cumberland location. The closures also need to be viewed against the company's overall store count. TJX ended fiscal 2026 with 1,348 T.J. Maxx stores in the US, up from 1,333 at the beginning of that fiscal year.

By the end of the second quarter of fiscal 2027, on Aug. 1, the number had increased again to 1,359 stores. That represents 11 more T.J. Maxx locations than at the end of fiscal 2026. The company's own store-opening schedule also shows continued expansion. T.J. Maxx lists new or relocated stores in markets including Charlotte, North Carolina; Paramus, New Jersey; Marshalltown, Iowa; Piqua, Ohio; Harrison, Arkansas; Lexington, Virginia; and Littleton, Massachusetts.

TJX Is Raising Its Long-Term Store Target

TJX's latest financial results provide additional context for the T.J. Maxx closures. For the quarter ended Aug. 1, TJX reported $15.18 billion in revenue, up 5% from the prior-year period. Consolidated comparable sales increased 4%, while net income reached $1.5 billion. The Marmaxx division, which includes T.J. Maxx, Marshalls and Sierra in the US, generated $9.11 billion in quarterly sales, up 3% from the same period a year earlier. Comparable sales for the division increased 1%.

TJX is also planning to accelerate store-opening growth to 4% beginning in fiscal 2028. The company increased its long-term global store target by 500 locations to 7,500 stores across its existing banners and countries. The broader portfolio had 5,285 stores at the end of the second quarter, including T.J. Maxx, Marshalls, HomeGoods, Sierra, Homesense and international banners.

That expansion is taking place while shoppers continue to pay close attention to value. Recent consumer spending trends have shown greater interest in discount and value-oriented retailers as household costs remain elevated.

TJX's strategy also illustrates why store closures can occur alongside aggressive expansion. Retailers regularly evaluate leases, store productivity, market demographics, and locations while reallocating capital toward markets where they see opportunities.

TJX's latest filings say virtually all of its store locations are leased, with most US and Canadian store leases generally carrying initial terms of about 10 years, plus renewal options. Some leases also contain early termination options.

For now, the confirmed 2026 T.J. Maxx closures remain limited to three locations, while the overall store base continues to grow. The available data therefore does not support describing the closures as a nationwide shutdown strategy.
