Sony Brings AI Upscaling to Standard PS5 With New QSSR Technology
  • Sony is bringing AI-powered image upscaling to the standard PlayStation 5, with Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei among the first games to support the technology.

Sony Group Corp. (NYSE: SONY) is expanding its AI graphics technology beyond the PlayStation 5 Pro with the launch of Quick Spectral Super Resolution, or QSSR, a new upscaling system designed specifically for the standard PS5.

Sony announced the technology Oct. 1 through the PlayStation Blog announcement, describing QSSR as a new performance tier of AI upscaling developed to work within the hardware limitations of the original PS5.

The technology builds on PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, or PSSR, which Sony introduced for the PS5 Pro. PSSR uses AI to analyze game images pixel by pixel and reconstruct them with greater detail and stability than conventional upscaling methods.

Sony said the computational requirements of PSSR previously prevented the same approach from being brought to the standard PS5. QSSR is intended to address that limitation through a streamlined neural-network architecture and a hand-tuned implementation designed around the PS5's existing hardware.

How QSSR Improves PS5 Graphics

QSSR comes from Project Amethyst, Sony's AI graphics collaboration with Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (NASDAQ: AMD). The partnership has also become part of AMD's broader work across AI computing and graphics technology, including its efforts to expand its AI hardware and software ecosystem.

Unlike PSSR on the PS5 Pro, QSSR was built as a more performance-focused system for the standard console. Sony said it can improve both image detail and image stability, particularly in complex environments where conventional reconstruction techniques can produce flickering or unstable fine details.

The first games receiving QSSR support are Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei. Both titles are receiving updates that add QSSR as an additional graphics option on PS5.

For Wolverine, Insomniac Games said the technology improves pixel-level clarity and stability across environments including Madripoor and Shinjuku. Sucker Punch Productions similarly said QSSR improves detail and temporal stability in Ghost of Yōtei, particularly across characters and environments.

Sony has also indicated that QSSR is not intended to replace PSSR on the PS5 Pro. PSSR remains the company's higher-end solution for the more powerful console. The difference reflects the hardware available in each system. The standard PS5 does not have the same dedicated machine-learning hardware as the PS5 Pro, meaning Sony had to develop a more efficient approach to AI-assisted image reconstruction.

QSSR Could Expand AI Graphics Across More PS5 Games

Sony said QSSR will be made broadly available to PlayStation developers, potentially allowing the technology to appear in more games as studios update their rendering systems. The rollout also shows how AI is increasingly being used inside consumer hardware without requiring a new generation of devices. Instead of relying solely on more powerful processors or graphics hardware, developers can use neural-network-based reconstruction to improve the appearance of images generated at lower internal resolutions.

That approach has become increasingly important as game developers try to balance image quality and performance. Rendering every frame at a high native resolution can place significant demands on a console's GPU, while upscaling can reduce the rendering workload and use additional processing to reconstruct the final image.

Sony's broader AI graphics work is part of a much larger expansion of AI computing across the semiconductor industry, where companies are developing processors, accelerators and software designed to handle increasingly demanding workloads.

For PS5 owners, the immediate impact will depend on how individual developers implement QSSR. Sony has not said that every existing PS5 game will automatically receive the feature. Instead, developers will decide whether to incorporate the technology into their titles.

The initial rollout with Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei gives players an early opportunity to compare QSSR with existing graphics options on the standard console. Future adoption will determine how widely the technology becomes used across the PS5 library.

Sony's announcement therefore does not eliminate the hardware differences between the standard PS5 and PS5 Pro. Instead, QSSR gives developers another software-based tool to improve visual quality on the millions of standard PS5 consoles already in use.
