Social Security COLA 2027: Latest Forecast Points to 3.5% to 3.6% Increase
  • The 2027 Social Security cost-of-living adjustment is currently projected at 3.5% to 3.6%, but the final increase will not be known until October.

Social Security recipients are getting a clearer picture of their potential 2027 cost-of-living adjustment (COLA), with current forecasts pointing to an increase between 3.5% and 3.6%.

The estimate is higher than the 2.8% COLA for 2026 and would represent the largest annual Social Security increase since 2023 if the forecast holds. The Delaware News Journal reported that the latest estimates from AARP, the Senior Citizens League, and independent Social Security analyst Mary Johnson are clustered around that range.

The figure remains a forecast, not an official benefit increase. The final COLA will depend on September inflation data, which is the last component needed for the Social Security Administration's calculation.

Social Security COLA 2027 Forecast Remains Between 3.5% and 3.6%

The Senior Citizens League currently projects a 3.5% increase, while AARP's estimate is 3.6%. Mary Johnson, an independent Social Security analyst, has also projected a 3.5% adjustment. The forecasts are based on inflation data used in the Social Security COLA calculation. The Social Security Administration's COLA methodology uses changes in the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers, known as CPI-W, to determine annual benefit increases.

The calculation compares the average CPI-W for July, August, and September with the corresponding third-quarter average from the previous year in which a COLA was established. The 2026 COLA was 2.8%, following a 2.5% increase in 2025. A final 2027 adjustment of 3.5% or 3.6% would therefore represent a larger increase than beneficiaries received during either of those years.

The official figure is expected to be announced on Oct. 14, after September inflation data is released. Until that data is incorporated into the formula, the current estimates can still change. That timing makes the September CPI report particularly important for the millions of Americans who receive Social Security retirement, disability, or survivor benefits.

How Much Could Social Security Checks Increase in 2027?

The size of the increase in dollar terms will depend on each beneficiary's existing monthly payment. For example, a 3.5% COLA would add about $70 a month to a $2,000 Social Security benefit, taking the monthly payment to approximately $2,070.

A 3.6% adjustment would add about $72 a month, bringing the same $2,000 benefit to approximately $2,072. For a $2,500 monthly benefit, a 3.5% increase would add about $87.50 per month, while a 3.6% increase would add about $90.

These are mathematical examples rather than estimates of what any particular retiree will receive. Actual Social Security payments vary according to an individual's earnings history, claiming age and other factors. Wealthier Today's coverage of maximum Social Security retirement benefits provides additional context on why monthly payments differ substantially between beneficiaries.

The COLA is also separate from the amount of Social Security a person initially qualifies for. It is an annual adjustment applied to existing benefits to account for changes in consumer prices.

For retirees planning their 2027 budgets, the distinction between the forecast and the official COLA is important. The 3.5%-to-3.6% range is not yet a confirmed increase, and the final figure will be determined after September's CPI-W data becomes available.

The SSA's official COLA history shows how annual adjustments have varied over time, reflecting changes in inflation.

The 2027 adjustment will become official in October and will determine how Social Security and Supplemental Security Income payments are adjusted for the following year. For now, the latest forecasts provide an indication of where the increase could land, but beneficiaries will need to wait for the official announcement before knowing the exact percentage.
