TSMC Profit Jumps 69% to Record, What's Driving The Growth?
  • Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing reported record third-quarter profit of NT$763.1 billion as demand for artificial intelligence chips lifted earnings above analyst expectations, reinforcing the importance of advanced semiconductor manufacturing to the global AI investment boom.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (NYSE: TSM), the world's largest contract chipmaker, reported a 69% year-over-year increase in third-quarter net profit on Thursday, October 15, as demand for AI processors drove another record result.

Net profit reached NT$763.1 billion, equivalent to approximately $23.59 billion, for the July-to-September period, surpassing the NT$746.3 billion estimate tracked by LSEG, according to Reuters' report on TSMC's earnings.

Revenue increased approximately 51% to NT$1.49 trillion, or about $46.7 billion, as customers continued ordering advanced chips used in AI data centers and other computing applications. The results extended TSMC's run of record quarterly profits to six consecutive quarters, reflecting sustained demand for its manufacturing capabilities.

The company supplies major technology businesses, including Nvidia Corp. (NASDAQ: NVDA) and Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL). Nvidia relies on TSMC to manufacture processors used in AI systems, while Apple uses its advanced production technologies for chips in its consumer devices.

The earnings follow record third-quarter sales that TSMC disclosed before releasing its full results. As discussed in Wealthier Today's preview of TSMC's earnings and AI chip demand, investors were watching whether strong sales would translate into higher profits and whether management would maintain its outlook for continued demand.

AI Chip Orders Continue to Outpace Manufacturing Capacity

TSMC said demand for its leading-edge process technologies remained extremely strong, with AI-related orders supporting growth across its advanced manufacturing business. The company has benefited from investment by cloud-computing providers building data centers to train and run AI models.

The company's latest results also highlight the role of semiconductor manufacturing equipment suppliers in the expansion. TSMC's production relies on advanced lithography and other specialized equipment, linking its performance to businesses across the semiconductor supply chain. Recent results from ASML Holding NV (NASDAQ: ASML), which supplies critical chipmaking equipment, have also pointed to continued demand associated with AI infrastructure investment.

TSMC's position is strengthened by the difficulty of replicating its advanced manufacturing capabilities at scale. Producing leading-edge processors requires substantial capital investment, technical expertise and close coordination with chip designers. That combination has made the company a central supplier as technology companies expand their AI computing capacity.

Management has indicated that demand for advanced chips remains ahead of available supply. The company is expanding manufacturing capacity in Taiwan and overseas, including in the US, while preparing to ramp up its next-generation production technologies.

The investment cycle carries costs as well as opportunities. Building new fabrication plants and installing advanced equipment require significant capital expenditure, while overseas facilities can have higher operating costs than established Taiwanese operations. TSMC must balance that spending with production efficiency and profitability as capacity expands.

TSMC Raises the Stakes for the AI Investment Outlook

TSMC's earnings provide another indication that spending on AI infrastructure is translating into sales for key semiconductor manufacturers. However, the results do not establish how quickly every company investing in AI will generate a return, or whether current levels of spending will continue indefinitely.

The company expects full-year 2026 revenue growth of approximately 44% in US dollar terms, according to its earnings conference remarks. Management also said demand for advanced manufacturing technologies remained robust and that it was increasing investment to support customer requirements.

Investors will be watching whether TSMC can sustain that growth while managing the cost of capacity expansion. Its ability to increase production, maintain yields and control expenses will influence how much of the additional revenue reaches the bottom line.

The results also matter for Nvidia, Apple and other customers that depend on TSMC's manufacturing capacity. Continued demand for advanced chips supports their product plans, but supply constraints and higher component costs can affect production schedules and margins across the technology industry.

Despite the strong earnings, TSMC's stock faced pressure around the results as investors weighed the outlook for AI-related shares and the broader semiconductor market. A strong quarterly report does not automatically translate into higher share prices when expectations are already elevated or investors are reassessing valuations.

For now, TSMC's record profit shows that demand for advanced chips remains a powerful growth driver. The next test will be whether the company can expand capacity quickly enough to meet customer needs while preserving profitability as the global AI buildout continues.
