OpenAI is holding discussions with Anthropic and Alphabet Inc. (GOOGL)'s Google DeepMind over ways to address artificial intelligence safety concerns, Bloomberg News reported Tuesday, citing OpenAI's global policy chief Chris Lehane.
The talks have been underway for several weeks, according to the report. Lehane said OpenAI does not view an antitrust waiver as necessary for the companies to coordinate on safety matters.
The discussions come as concerns over the potential risks of increasingly capable AI systems have intensified. Leaders from several major AI companies recently backed calls to slow the pace of development to give safety measures more time to keep up.
Lehane made the comments during a briefing in Washington while meeting with lawmakers, according to Bloomberg. He also said OpenAI would support bipartisan legislation designed to address catastrophic risks associated with AI, the report said.
The cooperation would bring together three major competitors in the AI industry as governments and technology companies debate how to manage risks associated with frontier AI systems.
