Is The Stock Market Open Today, And When Does Trading Resume After July 4?

/3 min read

The stock market is closed today, Friday, July 3, 2026, in observance of Independence Day, and there will be no trading activities carried out on this day. This means there is no regular session on the New York Stock Exchange or Nasdaq on July 3, and investors will not get the usual 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET trading window. The closure follows the stock market rule that when July 4 falls on a Saturday, the holiday is typically observed on the preceding Friday.

Stock Market Holiday Hours And What Investors Should Know

The current stock market shutdown does not come as a surprise. The NYSE says its cash equity markets observe Independence Day on Friday, July 3, 2026, when the holiday lands on a Saturday, and Nasdaq lists the same date as closed. FINRA’s 2026 holiday calendar also shows July 3 as the observed Independence Day closure, leaving time for people. Trading is expected to resume on Monday, July 6.

The broader market plumbing is also affected as A DTCC notice for Independence Day 2026 says both the stock markets and the National Securities Clearing Corporation will be closed on July 3, while US Federal Banks remain open. That distinction matters because even when banks are open, exchange trading and post-trade settlement systems may not be operating on their standard schedule.

However, not every trading venue behaves the same way during every holiday week. Some market segments, such as options and bonds, can have separate schedules or early closes on other dates during the year. The NYSE’s hours page notes that its options and bonds markets have their own session structures, so traders should always verify the exact product they use.

Other Businesses Closed For July 4

The July 4 holiday affects far more than the stock market. The US Postal Service said all post office locations will be closed on Saturday, July 4, with regular mail delivery and retail services set to resume Monday, July 6. USPS also noted that services such as Hold Mail, Change of Address, and Click-N-Ship remain available online even while retail locations are shut.

Federal Reserve holiday instructions also say the Federal Reserve Bank will be closed on Saturday, July 4, 2026, while the St. Louis Fed’s legal holiday schedule notes that Federal Reserve banks and branches are open on the preceding Friday when a holiday falls on Saturday. In other words, some financial back-office services may remain on a different timetable than the stock market itself.

Banks are often open on Friday, July 3, but hours may vary by branch and institution. Consumers should not assume every local office is operating normally just because online banking works. Nevertheless, ATMs, mobile apps, and card networks usually continue functioning, but in-person services and funds transfers can still be delayed by the holiday calendar.

Many retailers, grocery stores, drugstores, and big-box chains stay open on July 3 and July 4, though some reduce hours on the actual holiday. Private delivery companies such as UPS and FedEx often operate on modified schedules for holiday periods, so package timing can shift even if a merchant’s website remains live. Travelers should also expect potential schedule changes at airports, transit systems, and government offices.
